I agree with you on many aspects of your TED talk; going “green” seems to be done more as a marketing tool then to actually save the planet. However, I guess what I have always figured is that if using it as marketing rather then out of concern for the environment will still make large companies and individual people make changes, then it can’t be all bad, right?
Like you mentioned, they may dye the item green and take out a chemical and call it green. Yes, this isn’t enough to jack up the price and also claim that it alone will save the planet, but it is still a good first step. I mean, honestly I’d rather they take out one chemical then none.
As well, I was wondering about how much petroleum is actually used to make oil based products. How does the oil usage of making oil based products compare to shipping in foreign fragrances for use in natural cleaning agents?
    Awesome job :)

Interesting topic, there are so many ways of cleverly wording the labels to make us think that it is environmentally friendly, without actually being that way. It is similar to the way electric cars are advertised as being environmentally friendly. When more than often, the electricity to power then was made by burring fossil fuels.

I am wondering about the health side of this, if we ignore the environmental impact. There must also be health issues from rubbing harsh chemicals all over our skin on a regular basis. But is the “natural” product always better? The one with less artificial products and chemicals, when you look at it poison ivy and fossil fuels for are natural.

    Hey Sara!
Love your TED Talk! It’s a cool topic, sounds hard to research without getting swamped with useless advertisements. I like all the points you make about having products with ingredients you recognize. But I also really liked what you said about how natural fragrances coming from halfway across the world isn’t the greatest either.
And as Megan said: though they only take out a chemical and dye it green, it’s better than nothing, right? But yes, I really agree with how “going green” is very much a marketing tool, but it’s not doing more good than bad for the environment, no?

I found this a very interesting topic to research. I found a lot of truth in your TED talk. When you mention the email in the beginning and say that going green is a bit of a new concept I agree with you. It is a new type of concept and it is very interesting. I find that the going green cleaners are quite interesting and I agree that they are expensive and homemade cleaners are the way to go. Nice job!

Thanks for all the feedback guys!
So most of you commeted on the fact I sad the only taking out one ingredient wasn’t good enough, but I agree and I believe I said this in my Ted talk, it’s better than nothing! But we could also just use home made soap!
